Okay, I just learned that there are berries called tar berries. Has anyone tried them? What do they taste like? Can you make pies with them? Are they only available wild? And where do they grow?

  • no I haven't but based on what they are called I am not sure I am interested in trying them :P
    • Seriously, there is very little information about them on the Internet...

      www.google.com/search

I learned of them because of a wine description and my friends returning from the San Juan islands and mentioning that they'd had a dish prepared with them. If someone finds some info on them, please let me know. I have no idea what they taste like but am willing to try them.
      • Okay, I think it was a typo and was supposed to be "tar, berries" in the description of what the wine tasted like. Sigh.
        • Okay, prompted by a new member joining, I went back and did some more research on this and found the following info about "tay berries"--ah ha!

"I found these berries at the farmers mkt, called Tay Berries. It's a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry, with the size and sweet of a black and the color and tart of the rasp. I cooked some honey custards this morning with raspberries and tayberries in them. Yum!"

If anyone thinks they've seen these while actually picking in the wild, please let us know. In the meantime, I'll keep an eye out for them. If they are grown in hot-houses and/or a sterile hybrid then we won't see them out and about except in markets.

Here is a decent picture of some still on the vine:

          Are they out there?
